Johannesburg was established as a small village with the discovery of an outcrop of a gold reef on the Langlaagte farm. This gold reef was first discovered by George Harrison, who stumbled upon the glittering pieces of rock in 1886. His discovery came to be one of the greatest gold deposits the world has ever seen and sparked a gold rush in the area. As a result, the population of Johannesburg grew rapidly, and in 1928, the once small village was declared a city – making it the largest city in South Africa. The gold mine closed in 1971 and became the site for the Gold Reef City Theme Park which pays tribute to those pioneering days while providing adrenaline-pumping action and entertainment.

Advice for visitors
Whether you want family-friendly, kiddies rides or a big adrenaline rush, there is a ride for everyone. Don’t worry if you’ve got little ones – kiddies under 1.3m are limited to a special section of rides just for them. It is recommended to download the theme park map before arriving to plan the best experience. There are also two fantastic tours on offer: the informative Heritage Tour and Mine Tour, where you go down the mine shaft, an especially worthwhile tour taking you 75m underground in one of Johannesburg’s oldest mines.
